Philip and the U-haul truck

This was written to Philip's mom in an email last week. We had been looking at pictures of the U-haul truck that his dad rented last month for the move to the new house; I had sent the pictures to the big-screen TV so Philip could see them better.

Dear Julie/Mom, We see TV. I can see today. Truck I love you!backward out left right forward driveway. See you later! phiiil

My favorite part was when Philip wrote, " I love you!" to the truck!

Philip Makes a Funny

As I pulled into Philip's neighborhood on Friday afternoon, on my way to pick up his van and then pick him up from school, I spied a yardsale. It was literally one minute from his house. I could not resist. I HAD to stop. So I did. And I'm glad I did- I got a couple delightful and useful items. But it caused me to be about three minutes late in picking him up from school. This NEVER happens - I am always, always, ALWAYS early. So on the way home, I confessed to Philip what I had done - that I had stopped at the yardsale in his neighborhood and that's why I was late. ( He well knows my obsession with yardsales.) He then proceeded to go to a certain page in his Dynavox and hit his switch for a certain pre-programmed response, so his Dynavox said to me," You should be ashamed of yourself." Oh my goodness - I DIED laughing. He was grinning from ear to ear. Philip made a funny! I didn't even know that sentence was in there! I love seeing his sense of humor!

Philip and the U.P.S. truck

Last week, Philip wrote the following: "I hear honk. I see CVS." I was trying to figure out what he meant. Then he wrote all these different places around the house including mailbox and driveway...I couldn't figure out how he could hear the honk at CVS and then be at home. And then he said mailtruck. I finally figured out that instead of CVS, he meant UPS- and was talking about the UPS truck...but he didn't have anything on his vehicles page for U.P.S. truck. So I added it. Here is the final product of what he wrote:

"I hear Honk. I think U. P. S. Truck

Outside. I think I think I see U. P. S. Truck."

I was so excited and impressed with his creative problem solving in telling me that he wanted to add a new word to his vehicles page.

Monday

Claire: Today when I went to pick up Philip, Miss April came running around the corner with Philip and said, "Walk with me!" I did not know what was happening. She said, "They're going to have a fire drill! We have to get out because Philip hates that noise!" As soon as we were out the door, the buzzer went off and all the kids started coming out. Philip was so happy to have missed being inside when it went off. Here is what he wrote about it:

Philip: I'm happy. back eyes hand fire drill cold less little did not head I hear buzzer I go to the Van Miss. April.

Sunglasses

I just have to tell a little tale of something that happened with Philip that made my day! I was driving him to an appointment yesterday and mentioned that I had forgotten my sunglasses and I was annoyed at myself. A moment later, Philip used his Dynavox to say, "Glasses" twice. I was so surprised and said something silly like, "Yes! My sunglasses!" Then he went to a phrase based part of the device and said the phrases, "Do you have..." and "We have..." and I said, " Are you saying that you have sunglasses at your house that I could borrow?" I looked in the rearview mirror and saw him indicate "Yes." I was SO excited that I jumped up and down ( as safely as one can do while driving a mini-van) and screamed and almost cried! He thought that was hilarious. It meant a lot to me, not because he was offering to loan me sunglasses - although that was nice, but because he doesn't often make comments voluntarily. I'm so proud of him!
